Stutter is an indie promoter/club night in Bristol, self described as cutting edge indie, new wave and electro-pop. A quick scan through their playlists reveal a lot of post punk bands, such as Sleater Kinney, New Young Pony Club, Sonic Youth, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and many others.
The club night happens weekly, on thursday, at Thekla, which is a venue on a boat moored at the east mud docks.
Legendary queer post punk New York band God is my co-pilot are touring France this month and next month. Unfortunately, their MySpace page doesn’t say much and their website hasn’t been updated since July 2006, but i came across the details from their gig in Lyon, organised by my favourite promoter, Stephane from S’etant Chausse.
They will be in Lyon next monday (22nd october), at SONIC, (Péniche Mascaret - Quais de Saône), opposite 4, Quai des Etroits, 69005 Lyon, Métro - Tram. Arrêt Perrache, and it will set you off 6 Euros. Support is provided by Sheik Anorak (experimental noise) and Random Shuffle (3 bass players, one drummer).
I also found out on last.fm that they are supporting leeds prog-alt Quack Quack friday 19th October at Salle Polyvalente du Pont de Sèvres, Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, for the festival BBmix.
Finally, i found out all the dates for the tour on a website called infoconcert.com:
“love burns in your heart” is a song by french band Osni and it really stays with you. Or shall i say it burns in your heart?
They mix their influences cleverly. I can totally hear Sonic Youth in there but also 60s music like Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin’s duets, as well as surf music and the soundtrack from Pulp Fiction.
They describe themselves as both noisy and surfy and they are touring Europe at the end of the month + November.
Artrocker is one of the two best indie british music magazines of the moment (the other one is Plan B). As you can guess from the name, they cover a lot of post punk music.
They have decided to change the format and go monthly, with a thicker magazine and a bigger circulation of 30,000. They have also started a special “unsigned bands and indie club night” advertising rate, all the details are on their MySpace blog.
If you find yourself at one of “Excuse me” club nights in Treviso, Italy, you might hear some electroclash, some indie rock, some post punk and a lot of things in between.
They also release their DJ mixes once a month and the October one is available now. Among other gems, it contains a track by the very talented London post punk band, New Young Pony Club.
Queer Control Records will be in New York City on Oct 12-13th shooting a music video for Pariah Piranha and they need a few extras, so if you are available, you can contact them via their MySpace page.
I’m off in a few hours for a well deserved 5 days break to see my family so i won’t have access to the internet there and i therefore won’t post anything until i’m back on tuesday.
In the meanwhile, thrawl your local venues and the internet for new and exciting post punk bands and let me know about them
If you have been reading the indie press recently, you’ve probably read about Tiny Masters of Today, a band made up of a brother and a sister totalling just 24 years between them.
While i’ve got my reservations about the hype surrounding the band, i can’t help but love their duet with Karen O, titled “Hologram World”.
Part of me wishes all 12 years old were aware of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and other bands i adore, part of me can’t help thinking that maybe they are more the produce of their parents’ music taste than their own.
According to their MySpace page, they started writing songs when Ada was only 8. While i am all to encourage creativity in children, i’m actually questioning the benefit of making them record an album and play on big stages. It seems to me that they have had a well orchestrated PR campaign behind them - possibly run by their parents - and i’m not sure it will benefit their emotional well being in the years to come.
Encourage them to play music, by all means; encourage them to play live in front of their friends, by all means; encourage them to write new songs and develop their sound, by all means. But make them go on tour abroad during their school holidays? I’m not sure how you could top that with their following holidays…
The adventures of Loki hail from Lancaster, England, and their new single, titled “Dance like a maniac” is well, very aptly titled!
It’s bursting with energy, the two voices (one male, one female) complement each other very well, the guitars flirt with Rancid but there is an overall lightness that makes them go beyond cliche punk. The male vocals remind me of the Talking Heads, giving it a definite edge. When it all comes together, it’s got the power of the Pretty Girls Make Graves of “Speakers push the air”.
They’ve even done a resolutely low-budget video for it, check it out.
“Dance like a maniac” comes out next monday (8th October) and is available as a 7″ or as a download. It is released on London label 16TONS
ESG is one of those bands that is enjoying a second youth, thanks to the recent interest in post punk music. Founded in the late 1970s in the Bronx, New York, by 3 sisters, with the help of a friend, they created a blend of disco, funk and rock. They usually described themselves as art-funk.
They disbanded in the 80s and rebanded in the 90s. The re-release of previously recorded material has seen them getting back into the limelight and they’re now being regularly name-checked by many post punk, and hip hop, bands.
However, their drummer had some legal troubles a few months ago regarding an injured shoulder, for which she claimed compensation at work.
They played last week at the Estrojam festival in Chicago but their official website is down, and their MySpace pages (an official one and a fan one) have next to no news and don’t seem to be regularly maintained (there’s some spam in the comment).
The only bit of news on their official MySpace page has the tagline “ESG’s LAST show EVER! in Chicago FRI Sept 21st!!!” so i’m guessing they have packed it in. Is it due to the drummer’s legal problems? Anyone knows?
